WOOLF, Virginia: A Haunted House and Other Stories
London: The Hogarth Press: 1943. 13 x 19 cm. 124pp.
First edition, first printing.
This is a copy in very good condition. In publisher's original red cloth, spine cover lettered in gilt. Complete with a dust wrapper in good order, showing minor issues of use. Dust wrapper designed by Vanessa Bell. A nice copy, with only minor signs of use in a very few instances in the bottom edge and even more minor on spine. Some slight toning issues due to wartime paper quality. No marks of ownership inside. Overall, a nice copy of a now classic, and a chance to own the original of one of Vanessa Bell's beautiful collaborations with the Hogarth Press.
A Haunted House is a collection of eighteen of Virginia Woolf's short stories, selected and published posthumously by her husband Leonard Woolf, containing both previously published and unpublished stories. The opening story, "A Haunted House", was seemingly inspired by Asheham, a small early 19th century house that Vanessa and Virginia rented from 1912-1919, and that they both believed to be haunted.
