Proust, Marcel: Remembrance of Things Past. 12 Volume Set
London: Chatto & Windus: 1957. 12 x 19 cm, 12 vol. Illustrated by Philippe Jullian
First UK illustrated edition.
A very scarce, good set of the Marcel Proust masterpiece, in the famous C.K. Scott Moncrieff version, except the last volume, completed by Stephen Hudson. Moncrieff published the first volume of his Proust translation in 1922 and continued to work on the other volumes until his death in 1930, when he was working on the final volume. His choice of the title Remembrance of Things Past is not a literal translation of the original French, but taken from the second line of Shakespeare's Sonnet 30: "When to the sessions of sweet silent thought / I summon up remembrance of things past". This has remained the best-known title of the work in English.
A really lovely set, with most volumes in good condition, only volume one presenting a tear on the upper edge dust wrapper, and some others minor signs of use around edges. All in original publisher blue cloth and gilded spine, with ivory endpapers and frontispiece illustration.
